How to plan and to prepare a visit

To access the archives you will have to show your passport with visa for humanitarian/scientific-technical exchange and a letter of introduction from your institution (otnoshenie) addressed to the Director of the Archive (currently: Alexander Šapošnikov / Шапошников Александр Сергеевич).

Foreign citizens are requested to send the following information to the archive 8 working days prior to the planned visit: first name, surname, citizenship, research topic, passport data, planned dates of visit and a letter of introduction from your institution.

For detailed information see the archive’s website (in Russian).

Registration

You will have to register in person at the reading rooms. Necessary documents are: passport, letter of introduction from your institution and a completed registration form (АНКЕТА пользователя) that may be found on the archive’s website.

Reading Rooms

The reading room is very small with only a few working spaces; the archivists responsible for the reading room sit, work and speak with each other (or on the phone) in the same room.

A microfilm reader is available.

Reading Room rules and regulations

For entering the building, the visitor needs a visitor pass (propusk) which is issued in the room on the left-hand side immediately after the entrance. (Propusk is personalized, so it is important to inform the archive about the exact dates of your visit.)

Expect a waiting period for ordered archival material of two working days.

Copies and photo prints are possible for a fee (see the price list online).

There is a printed description of archival fonds:

Practical advice

  • If you require advice on how to enter Russia, please visit the Russian Visa Requirements page. Specific to Europe, Russian consulates take 3 to 10 business days for the visa processing. In addition, Russian visas issued by the consulates in Europe may have a five day “waiting period” on entering Russia, i.e. the person cannot travel to Russia for at least 5 days after the visa is issued.
  • The closest metro station is “Kaluzhskaya”; from there to the archives site, it is a two-minute walk
  • In order to access material of Fond No. 6 (RKK Energija), you will need a respective permission from the RKK Energija company
